| Dietary Vitamin E During Pregnancy Reduces Childhood Asthma
ABERDEEN, Scotland, Sept. 1 -- Children whose mothers consume more foods containing vitamin E during pregnancy are less likely to develop wheeze or asthma by the age of five, according to researchers here. Those born to mothers who had the lowest vitamin E intake were 3.47 times more likely to have persistent wheeze and five times more likely to have early-onset persistent asthma than those born to mothers with the highest levels, found Graham Devereux, M.D., Ph.D., of the University of Aberdeen, and colleagues. Higher maternal dietary vitamin E intake, assessed at 32 weeks gestation on a dietary questionnaire and nonfasting blood sample, was associated with less wheezing in their children after five years of follow up, even after adjustment for a full range of variables including breast feeding.
Healthy Eating by Nancy Berkoff
Spinach adds life to salads and side dishes. Spinach was a Spanish secret for many years. This deep green mystery is thought to have originated in Persia and was brought to Spain by the Moors. Eventually, the news — and the leaves — spread throughout Europe and became very popular. Catherine de Medici, of Italian royalty fame, liked spinach so much that when she went to marry the king of France she brought cooks from her native Florence to prepare her favorite green veggie. To this day, dishes garnished with spinach are called "a la florentine." Treat yourself just like royalty and procure some fresh spinach. You can select from good oldfashioned spinach, which is fully mature and has broad leaves, baby spinach or bagged spinach, which is usually cleaned and washed.
INSIDE OUT Rejuvenate your skin
THE largest organ in the human body probably receives more punishment than any other part. Its job is to insulate and protect, as well as give the body its appealing package. Can you imagine yourself without your skin? We would die without it. So lets learn how we can improve, even rejuvenate, it. Here are some helpful ideas from the Philippine Dermatological Society (PDS): Basic truths Eos. Oxygen to regenerate and rejuvenate skin has been around for over a century. The application of oxygen to the skin reverses aging almost instantly. A clinic called Eos (after the Greek goddess of air) in Laguna designed the EO2S rejuvenation oxygen therapy. Some 300 million years ago the atmosphere was 21-percent oxygen. Today, the oxygen content of the air is 18 percent.
Overexposure to the Sun Can Happen Indoors and Outdoors
In the car, at work or walking to and from a store, you can't escape the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays. However, new research about the transmission of UV light through window and automobile glass and through sunglasses, has led to developments that can help protect people from the sun. "People should realize that even during everyday activities they are receiving incidental sun exposure which harms the skin as it accumulates and can result in premature aging, wrinkles and even skin cancer," said dermatologist Henry W. Lim, M.D., chairman of the department of dermatology, Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Mich., and co-author of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology article entitled, "Photoprotection by window glass, automobile glass and sunglasses." "Dermatologists and manufacturers of glass products and sunglasses are continually working to find better ways to decrease the amount of UV radiation being filtered through these items to the skin and eyes.
