PORT STANLEY -- Four flags rustle gently in the warm summer breeze on the facade of M.E. & Suzie's -- Canada's Maple Leaf, the Ontario emblem, the Union Jack and the Foodland Ontario logo, the latter offering an insight into what this unique new eatery is all about. "Our restaurant and local produce are synonymous, "said co-owner Suzanne Van Bommel (the establishment's Suzie). "The best food -- from the meat, fish and vegetables to our beverages -- locally grown, produced and prepared to meet the most discerning of palettes. I knew that this was something I always wanted to do. "When I was with the (provincial) government, I had worked extensively with Ontario Foodland over the years, always hoping that we could do something even bigger with it. So this enterprise is really the perfect blend -- the ideal vehicle for demonstrating just why our local produce is second to none." Last December Van Bommel -- Elgin-Middlesex-London MPP Steve Peters' former executive assistant (1999-2003) and the Ontario Minister of Agriculture's chief of staff (2003-2005) -- got the proverbial ball rolling with new business partners Helen LeFrank of Elgin Community Futures and Melvin Earle Wilson (the restaurant's M.E.), then the executive chef of the Kettle Creek Inn.
Call to incorporate soya farming in national food policy
Compared to other protein crops, soya beans are a better take, which Tanzanians should adapt for improved health, a Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) Associate Professor said yesterday in Dar es Salaam. Prof Laswai said, during the exhibition of Tanzania public and private universities, that it was a fact that majority of farmers in the country were not aware of soya beans wonderful secret. He said soya farming should be incorporated in the implementation of National Food Policy. It has excellent protein required by the body. Our people still suffer extensive malnutrition due to lack of adequate proteins and minerals. There are so many crops that can minimize the problem, he said but added that soya beans were the most suitable for checking the menace.
Improved Nutrition Through Maize Meal Fortification
GENERAL nutrition levels in Zambia indicate that one in every two children under five years of age suffer from iron deficiency. The justification is that children experience rapid physical growth. Thus, sexual maturation significantly increases. They develop a need for micronutrients, especially iron, while adolescent girls' growth spurt occurs before menarche - first menstrual periods. Adolescent children continue to grow in height. Linear growth particularly of the long bones is not complete until the age of 18 and peak bone mass is not achieved until the age of 25. At two years of age, many of the children who survive under such nutritional stress are stunted due to lack of Vitamin A with little chance of recovery. Moreover, in some parts of the world children, especially girls, are discriminated against in access to food, health care and education.
