| Eating your way to lower cholesterol
If you have high blood cholesterol - like an estimated 100 million Americans - then chances are you're trying to change the way you eat. Your blood cholesterol level has a lot to do with your risk of getting heart disease, which remains the country's No. 1 killer. Diet often is the first defense before a doctor turns to drugs to lower cholesterol levels. Losing weight, exercising and cutting down on "bad" fats are the cornerstones of a cholesterol-lowering lifestyle. Those basics haven't changed, but you may be surprised by some of the diet advice you'll likely get today. "Nothing has to be totally eliminated," said dietitian David Grotto, a spokesman for the American Dietetic Association who frequently counsels clients with elevated cholesterol levels.
Call to incorporate soya farming in national food policy
Compared to other protein crops, soya beans are a better take, which Tanzanians should adapt for improved health, a Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) Associate Professor said yesterday in Dar es Salaam. Prof Laswai said, during the exhibition of Tanzania public and private universities, that it was a fact that majority of farmers in the country were not aware of soya beans wonderful secret. He said soya farming should be incorporated in the implementation of National Food Policy. It has excellent protein required by the body. Our people still suffer extensive malnutrition due to lack of adequate proteins and minerals. There are so many crops that can minimize the problem, he said but added that soya beans were the most suitable for checking the menace.
Take Care of That Sensitive Skin
Do you take good care of your skin? If you are like most people, probably not. The skin that you inherited from your parents will be greatly influenced by other factors as you age. Aging of the skin is a process that happens over years and varies greatly depending on your sun exposure, your environment, health habits and your general lifestyle. The sun and its ultraviolet rays have the greatest impact on how the skin ages. As we age, the collagen and elastin fibers of the skin naturally weaken. This happens at a much faster rate if the skin is frequently over exposed to ultraviolet rays without protection. There are two different forms of UV rays; the UVA rays and the UVB rays. UVA rays, otherwise known as the aging rays, contribute to 90-95 percent of the suns ultraviolet rays that reach the earths surface.
'Our local produce is second to none'
So this enterprise is really the perfect blend -- the ideal vehicle for demonstrating just why our local produce is second to none." Last December Van Bommel -- Elgin-Middlesex-London MPP Steve Peters' former executive assistant (1999-2003) and the Ontario Minister of Agriculture's chief of staff (2003-2005) -- got the proverbial ball rolling with new business partners Helen LeFrank of Elgin Community Futures and Melvin Earle Wilson (the restaurant's M.E.), then the executive chef of the Kettle Creek Inn. In the remarkably short span of five months, massive renovations to the 295 Bridge St. structure in the heart of the beach community's downtown core were completed, the aforementioned flags were flying and on May 15 -- the day after Mother's Day -- an eatery paying homage to all things local was born.
