| 'Our local produce is second to none'
So this enterprise is really the perfect blend -- the ideal vehicle for demonstrating just why our local produce is second to none." Last December Van Bommel -- Elgin-Middlesex-London MPP Steve Peters' former executive assistant (1999-2003) and the Ontario Minister of Agriculture's chief of staff (2003-2005) -- got the proverbial ball rolling with new business partners Helen LeFrank of Elgin Community Futures and Melvin Earle Wilson (the restaurant's M.E.), then the executive chef of the Kettle Creek Inn. In the remarkably short span of five months, massive renovations to the 295 Bridge St. structure in the heart of the beach community's downtown core were completed, the aforementioned flags were flying and on May 15 -- the day after Mother's Day -- an eatery paying homage to all things local was born.
Your Health Comes First!
Before being diagnosed a diabetic in 2003, I did not focus a great deal on my diet or the nutritional value of the foods that I was eating. I never thought that food would be my enemy. But because so many foods that our families eat today are synthetic, processed and have poor nutritional value, I had to take a step back and make a lifestyle change. At first, I was in denial and informed my doctor that I wanted to try controlling my diabetes solely through watching my diet. After a follow-up visit, my blood-glucose levels had not made a significant change. So I began taking daily insulin shots to manage my blood sugar. In addition, there was an about-face with exercise and proper rest. I lost 65 pounds over the next 6 months. My body had not looked this good in a long time and my energy level was soaring.
INSIDE OUT Rejuvenate your skin
THE largest organ in the human body probably receives more punishment than any other part. Its job is to insulate and protect, as well as give the body its appealing package. Can you imagine yourself without your skin? We would die without it. So lets learn how we can improve, even rejuvenate, it. Here are some helpful ideas from the Philippine Dermatological Society (PDS): Basic truths Eos. Oxygen to regenerate and rejuvenate skin has been around for over a century. The application of oxygen to the skin reverses aging almost instantly. A clinic called Eos (after the Greek goddess of air) in Laguna designed the EO2S rejuvenation oxygen therapy. Some 300 million years ago the atmosphere was 21-percent oxygen. Today, the oxygen content of the air is 18 percent.
Healthy Snack Menu May Help Low-income Children Consume More Fruit ...
04/09/06 School lunches and vending machines aren't the only places to look for ways to improve students' nutrition. Modest changes in the kinds of snacks offered at after-school programs can also have a significant positive impact on children's diets, UC Davis researchers report in the September 2006 issue of the American Journal of Public Health. The study suggests that a healthy snack menu in an after-school program can help low-income children -- those at highest risk of obesity -- consume more fruit and less saturated fat, said lead author Diana Cassady, an assistant professor of public health sciences at UC Davis. "Even though school food programs have very limited budgets, this study suggests that with leadership and a little bit of political will, food service for kids really can be improved," Cassady said.
